Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Once again we hear of Jonah, the reluctant prophet, finally obeying God’s command to preach a message of repentance and turning to God in faith to the people of Nineveh. The whole city repents of their evil ways and God shows them mercy. Likewise, in the Gospel this week, Jesus utters these words as he shares the Good News: “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” In a few short weeks we will hear these or similar words as ashes are imposed on our foreheads.
Yes, Lent is the traditional season of penance and fasting, but the invitation to turn from sin and embrace the life of grace is always there for us. As we look forward to our annual 40 day retreat, we must make sure we identify all the areas in our lives where positive spiritual change must occur.
