The first readings from daily Mass this week came from the book of Job. Job was at a loss to understand why he found himself in such a desperate and tragic state. Where was God in all this? He demanded an answer and God did not hold back. Job had to learn the hard lesson that he was not in charge. God was God and Job was not. In the end Job’s former life of blessing and abundance was restored.
Habakkuk, in our first reading this weekend, calls out to God in a similar fashion: “I cry for help but you do not listen.” In a vision he hears the voice of God encourage him to have faith so he may live. Although no one likes tragedy or adversity, one thing is for certain they do help us mature in our spiritual lives. Without setbacks in the short term, moving forward spiritually in the long-term would be very difficult.
